West German experimental Krautrock band Can were best known for their tracks "I Want More", "Vitamin C" and "Spoon". Their albums Ege Bamyasi and Tago Mago are cited as influential by a long list of artists, including David Bowie and Talking Heads. More recently their echoes can be heard in the works of Primal Scream and Gorillaz.
Their third album, Future Days, provided an early example of ambient works, but with each album they departed further from their original experimental sound. Signing to Virgin in 1975 saw the band moving into the mainstream, and the single "I Want More" (1976) is probably the band's most accessible work, providing them with a chart hit outside Germany, and a template for dance and disco records to follow.
The commercialisation of the band's sound led to founder Holger Czukay's relegation to the fringes, and after the release of Can in 1979 he left the band. They carried on for two more albums then went on hiatus, coming together again to record the album Rite Time in 1989 and in 1991 to record a track for the Wim Wenders film Until the End of the World.
