Close to You was the second album by The Carpenters, released in August 1970. In 2003, the album was ranked number 175 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The album contains the hit singles "(They Long to Be) Close to You" and "We've Only Just Begun". "(They Long to Be) Close to You" was the duo's first big hit that gained the Carpenters international reputation for a decade. The album peaked at #2 in the Billboard Albums Charts, but reached #1 on its Canadian counterpart.

Their second album (after Offering/Ticket To Ride), this album established the Carpenters as a new sound in the popular music world. It is not hard to understand their success, as this album is a solid winner in every respect, with two top-10 rated hits, "Close To You, and "We've Only Just Begun".

3 stars Songs are pure art, but they don't fit right in together.
Ticket To Ride, the first A&M Carpenters single didn't made it well on charts, reaching 54. So, they went on work at 1970 looking for new material and found Bacharach's Close To You, which they redone as beautifully as anyone ever. It's still my favourite Carpenters song and reached 1. However, at that time they were not keeping on any real project album and had to quickly launch some including the song.
