Biography

Edit

Country-pop singer Carrie Underwood was the winner of the fourth series of American Idol. As a result of that win she was awarded a recording contract with Arista Nashville, and released her first album Some Hearts shortly after. Some Hearts (2005) did very well with multi-platinum sales of around seven million copies in the US, no doubt buoyed by the immediate post-win fervour of American Idol watchers. The album also spawned several Top 10 hits, most notably "Inside Your Heaven", "Before He Cheats" and "Don't Forget to Remember Me". Her latest release Carnival Ride (2007) -- so named because life is like a carnival ride -- topped the Billboard album chart on release, received warm critical praise, and spawned the US Country chart-topping hit "So Small".

Carrie Underwood

Apr, 7 2009

The Academy of Country Music Awards was dominated by the ladies this year, with Carrie Underwood nabbing the top prize of Entertainer of the Year and Taylor Swift finding acclaim with the Album of the Year award for Fearless. Underwood, wearing a tumbling wine coloured gown which in other circumstances could have easily upstaged her, seemed aware of the significance of her success. "I accepted that award on behalf of myself and my fans, but also on behalf of other women who came before me that kicked butt but never got the recognition they deserved. I can't wait (for) the day, which I hope is in the very near future, where having females in the category is no big deal whatsoever." However, one lady notable by her absence from the awards was Jessica Simpson, amidst recent rumors which suggest that she is out of favor in Nashville and may have been dropped by her record label.
