Biography

Edit

Cassettes Won't Listen is the brainchild of New York-based, multi-instrumentalist and producer Jason Drake and is the latest in a heap of musical monikers he has realized over the years.

Cassettes Won't Listen was initially just a bedroom affair; in 2004, he picked up the microphone for the first time in years and sang over a new track he had recently written. The result…future fan favorite and eventual single, “Cutting Balloons”, He sent the track out to a few friends and never expected anything more. He soon saw the mp3 appearing on influential blogs including Gorilla vs. Bear and Scissorkick. As this fan base grew, Jason served up the digital-only EP Nobody's Moving in October of 2005. "Cutting Balloons" reached #1 on WOXY's Top 20 charts after just weeks of being added to rotation.

In the wake of the release of Nobody's Moving, a wide range of artists, commissioned countless Cassettes Won't Listen remixes, including El-P, (featuring Trent Reznor), Midlake, Asobi Seksu, Dr. Octagon, Pela, Dirty on Purpose, Mr. Lif, and Morcheeba, amongst others.

Cassettes Won’t Listen followed up Nobody's Moving with another digital-only release, the instrumental album The Quiet Trial. Both Nobody's Moving and The Quiet Trial have received much critic fanfare, including radio tastemakers WOXY and KEXP, SPIN, the NY Press, the notorious Perez Hilton as well as landing an exclusive front page feature on Myspace.com and being name one of Urb’s Next 100 for 2007.

Cassettes Won't Listen embodies an otherworldly and distinctive blend of electronica and indie rock, with comparisons being drawn to the Postal Service, Beck, Hot Chip, The Notwist, and DJ Shadow. His live show blasts at a frantic pace with Jason hopping from turntables to guitar to keys and vocals as a true one-man band.

Small-Time Machine is Cassettes Wont Listen's first ever physical release. Entirely written, played and produced by Jason Drake, Small-Time Machine deals with many of the themes that touch us all, including: love, betrayal, hope, disappointment and the quest to find what's missing in each of our lives. Small-Time Machine is the next chapter in the career of one of the true new voices of the 21st Century.

2009 has brought a lot for Cassettes Won't Listen. His latest instrumental album, Into The Hillside, received critical acclaim and remixing artists such as Dappled Cities, The Dears, among many others, has kept him very busy. He is scheduled to host MTV2's Subterranean this December 13th, 2009.
