Biography

Edit

Cecilia Bartoli (born June 4, 1966 in Rome) is an Italian mezzo-soprano opera singer and recitalist. She is best-known for her interpretation of the music of Mozart and Rossini, as well as for her performances of lesser-known Baroque and classical music. She is known for having the versatility to play both soprano and mezzo roles, and is sometimes considered a soprano with a low tessitura. Bartoli's coloratura skill has earned her the title the Queen of Agility.

Cecilia Bartoli

Oct, 23 2009

Next week sees the release of another unconventional album from the Italian mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli. Though her early career relied on the classic operatic staples and established her success in the genre, she took a detour from the mainstream in 2005 with Opera Proibita which explored music banned in 18th century Rome as a result of papal prohibition. Then in 2006 she released Maria, which celebrated the life of the feisty and tempestuous 19th century opera star, Maria Malibran. Her next musical adventure, Sacrificium will be into the controversial world of the castrati; 18th century boys who were castrated to preserve the pure sweetness of their boyhood voices. Of the project Bartoli said, "I have always sung a lot of music which Mozart wrote for the castrati… I noticed that many people know music that was written for castratos, but do not know about the tragedy behind it. I think it is most important to talk about this, because it deepens our understanding for this music and it helps me as an interpreter." The 2CD set will be released as a deluxe edition which includes a book and booklet of supplemental information about the castrati. Though times for the record industry are hard, and the release of more challenging works is a risk, Bartoli’s label, Decca confirmed its “unwavering confidence” in her ambitious exploration of the 200 year old search for the perfect voice.
