Biography

Edit

The Cherry Poppin' Daddies are an American rock band established in Eugene, Oregon in 1989. Formed by Steve Perry (vocals) and Dan Schmid (bass), the band has experienced many membership changes over the years, with only Perry, Schmid and Dana Heitman (trumpet) currently remaining from the original line-up.

Assembled from punk rock and jazz backgrounds, the Daddies were conceived as a counter against the rising grunge movement of the Northwest, playing an intentionally iconoclastic combination of punk, swing music, funk and ska along with flashy and provocative stage shows. While their music is rooted predominantly in rock, ska and swing, the band's eclectic studio albums have further expanded their sound to incorporate a wide variety of genres, most notably glam rock, soul, psychedelia, country, rockabilly, ska punk and Latin music.

After finding initial success within the third wave ska touring circuit, the Daddies broke into the musical mainstream in 1998 with their swing-based compilation album Zoot Suit Riot (1997). Released at the onset of the late 90s swing revival, Zoot Suit Riot sold over two million copies in the United States while its titular single became a smash hit on modern rock radio, launching the Daddies to the forefront of the neo-swing movement, a classification they resented. By the turn of the century, however, the Daddies' mainstream popularity had declined with that of the swing revival, and the resulting commercial failure of their follow-up album Soul Caddy led to an unexpected hiatus in 2000.

The Daddies officially regrouped in 2002 to resume touring, independently recording and releasing their fifth studio album, Susquehanna, in 2008. In 2009, the band signed to Rock Ridge Music to release the ska-themed compilation Skaboy JFK and possible future releases.
