Chris de Burgh is a British singer-songwriter, born in Argentina but who considers himself to be Irish.
His early career was met by indifference in his home country but he built a loyal fanbase in Europe and South America. It wasn't until the single, "Don't Pay the Ferryman", from 1982's The Getaway, that he hit the charts in the US and the UK. Four years later, he dominated many charts across the world with "The Lady in Red", a saccharine ballad which earned plaudits and ridicule in equal measure. To date he has only achieved two hit singles in the US and UK charts but he has retained his fame in other parts of the world.
Though lampooned by many, his success is indisputable: In all he has released 26 albums, including compilations and live CDs and is credited with having sold over 40 million units during his career.
