Super Bowl Sunday: Christina Aguilera's National Anthem

Feb, 6 2011

While Sunday night’s Super Bowl XLV may have been a highlight for many Green Bay Packers’ fans, it was arguably a low point for many music fans. The game opened with Christina Aguilera singing the National Anthem. Halfway through our country’s song, the blonde belter botched the words and repeated a verse. There are a few videos of her flub on YouTube right now; this is the best one so far (especially the narrator when he realizes she messed up). Once the game began, the internet lit up with conspiracy theories about Aguilara’s performance- some say her botched performance means big wins for some in Vegas. Now, on to the Halftime show. We here at SoundUnwound won’t knock the entertainment value of Usher’s dancing, however we are not so sure about The Black Eyed Peas. Head on over to our Facebook and let us know what you think. There is a pretty lively conversation about the Peas’ show happening right now; we are hearing a lot of “possibly the worst ever." And, just for kicks- check out Stereogum’s list of ”The Worst Super Bowl Halftime Performances Since We Were Born.” **Update: Check out the grade that ESPN.com readers gave to the Peas' performance here. Way to go, America! -Erin O.

Is There Room For Bionic Christina?

Apr, 11 2010

Since Christina Aguilera’s last album, 2006’s Back to Basics, the musical landscape has changed quite considerably. The last four years have been an eventful time for female artists, and many would argue that in Christina’s absence her position as number one diva-and-glam fashion icon has been usurped by a young pretender, Lady Gaga. However, with forthcoming album Bionic due for release in June, Christina has taken to her website to make it clear that she hasn’t been lounging around in sweatpants watching daytime television all this time. “Over the past four years I have learned a lot about myself and what I am capable of,” she wrote, “what all women are capable of. Since the release of my last studio album, Back to Basics, I have become a mother, a wife, and most recently an actress. All of these new experiences have allowed me to face new challenges and explore different sides of myself I did not even know existed… I have learned that like all women I am sometimes capable of being superhuman. Like all women I am BIONIC…” In all it’s quite a rallying call to the sisterhood, perhaps suggesting that X-tina will be happy to share her crown with her fellow bionic women. Does that even include Lady Gaga? Just how she will fit back in with Gaga currently dominating pop will be interesting to see.

Christina Aguilera

Aug, 19 2009

Christina Aguilera has been speaking about her upcoming new album, her first in three years, which she's recorded in collaboration with approximately 13,000 other musicians. "I think I'm most proud of this work than I've ever been, just because I worked with so many amazing and incredibly talented people," she told A.P.E. Radio in a phone call last week. It was already known that she was recording with Goldfrapp, Sia (best known as a guest singer for Zero 7) and Le Tigre. "[Sia and I] did a lot of work on this record together, and she's just a complete gem. She's truly just such a talented force to be reckoned with. I so enjoyed her company, and I think we really created some super crazy magic together." She's added some new names to the credit sheet too: "I got a chance to sort of write with Santigold, M.I.A., Ladytron — artists that I really love... Working with so many different people, I really kind of wanted to step into their worlds, them into my world and just get the best of both worlds. There truly is something for everyone to enjoy on the record."
