Overview Edit

Christina Aguilera is the self-titled debut album by American pop singer Christina Aguilera. Released on August 24, 1999 (see 1999 in music) in the U.S. by RCA, the album became a worldwide commercial success, making Aguilera a worldwide star overnight with her breakthrough hit single "Genie in a Bottle", as well as the later singles "What a Girl Wants", "I Turn to You", and "Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)". Genie in a Bottle peaked at number one on Billboard Hot 100, making it one of the most successful airplay-only singles in history. "Genie in a Bottle" stayed number one for five weeks due to strong airplay and Physical CD sales, leading Aguilera's debut record to worldwide success. Aguilera garnered three number ones in the U.S. and three Top 10 hits in the U.K. It also featured the song she recorded a year earlier for the Mulan soundtrack, "Reflection". Her debut album helped her receive three Grammy nominations, two of which were for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance: "Genie in a Bottle" in 2000 and "What a Girl Wants" in 2001. This album also led to a nomination for Best New Artist in 2000, which she won by beating Britney Spears, Macy Gray, Kid Rock, and Susan Tedeschi. Billboard ranked "Christina Aguilera" at number 23 on the magazine's Top 200 Albums of the Decade.

5 stars No Britney...Thank God!
Don't write Ms. Aguilera off as the next Britney Spears. Unlike Britney's babyish and mechanical voice, Christina sounds soulful and powerful. (NOTE: Someone said that Christina herself was the only one making the Mariah/Whitney comparisions...not true. Christina has said that both singers are influences, but SonicNet, MTV, and many others have compared her voice to them.) Here's my little review:

1. GENIE IN A BOTTLE: A cool dance track. It sounds MUCH better on stereo than on the radio, though…

3 stars It will be interesting to see....
One thing people often neglect to consider is that Christina Aguilera was not signed to create art. Before you explode on me hear me out. If you look at her record, she wrote none of it. CA was signed to sing an already written script that has proven itself profitable by people with half her talent and comeliness. This record is product just as much the Clearasil face pads that her fanbase run rabid for so it is unfair to attack her for what she has no control over.

That said, it is more accurat…
