Biography

Edit

Cocorosie is a duo formed by two American sisters, Sierra and Bianca Casady, whose music is self-described as “an eclectic montage.” Their music is a mélange of harp playing, an odd assortment of percussion instruments (including children’s toys) and their contrasting vocal styles: Sienna's voice is operatic while Bianca's is like a mewling cat.

The sisters’ upbringing was far from stable, a product of divorced parents and a nomadic lifestyle. Although they lost regular touch when Sierra was sent to boarding school when she 14 they connected again in 2003 after Bianca had taken the decision to travel round the world, by which time Sienna was in Paris studying to be an opera singer.

The result was a recording, La Maison de mon Rêve (2004), which was intended to be circulated only amongst their friends, but which resulted in them being signed to Touch and Go Records. Noah’s Ark, released the following year, found them collaborating with Antony Hegarty and Devendra Banhart and their most recent, The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn was released in 2007 to, once again, a mixed critical reception.

Delirium Is CocoRosie's Drug Of Choice

May, 20 2010

Convention has never been a part of CocoRosie’s life. Their album output to date has prompted polarized opinions from reviewers, with some critics finding their self-described “eclectic montage” of musical styles and instruments to be fascinatingly inventive, while others have deemed them a little too self-indulgent to love. But the American sisters’ musical approach is born of an eccentric lifestyle: from their fractured, nomadic upbringing, via a lengthy separation in their teens, to the reunion which culminated in La Maison de mon Rêve; an album recorded during a month long seclusion in a Parisian bathroom. Unsurprisingly, their latest release Grey Oceans has had similarly unusual origins. They say one song was written during five long days and nights of sleep deprivation, and another was constructed using long-hidden tape recordings of their mother singing in Cherokee. “We were really losing track of night and day” Bianca told AOL Spinner about the former track, “using delirium as a drug. It's a little nutso, the way we were working.” They have, they attest, “pushed even further our differences and played with this dualism to show an inner and outer world expression in the characters of our songs.” With ambitions like that, the sisters will continue to divide opinion.
