Biography

Edit

The Cocteau Twins were formed in Scotland in 1980 by bassist Will Heggie and guitarist Robin Guthrie. They were joined by vocalist Elizabeth Fraser who would be ‘instrumental’ in providing the band with their distinctive style. Fraser’s ethereal vocal style blurs words into sounds and yet still maintains their emotional content. It is well described as dream pop.

Their sound developed gradually over their first few releases (during which time Will Heggie left and Simon Raymonde joined) and came to fruition on the 1984 album Head Over Heels. After a series of releases, including the album The Moon and the Melodies, made in collaboration with American ambient artist Harold Budd, the band had their greatest success with Heaven or Las Vegas. The album was released in 1990 and reached the Top Ten in the UK and the Top 100 in the US.

Problems between the band members caused them to split in 1996.
