Biography

Edit

Coil was an English Industrial/Experimental/Electronic group formed in 1982 by Jhonn Balance and Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson. Balance chose the name Coil because of the shape's omnipresence in nature. The group's sound changed several times over their nearly 30 year catalog, ranging from avant garde industrial music to symphonic, krautrock, gothic, tribal, ritualistic, and even ambient drones. They spent much of their early career as a studio band, but in the late 90's, they began to perform breathtaking live shows until Balance's accidental death from a fall in November 2003. In 2010, Colour Sound Oblivion, a 16 disc live dvd set was released. A handful of other releases came after Balance's death courtesy of Sleazy, and the group was somewhat still active until his sudden, unexpected death in November 2010. They are considered one of the first industrial bands and easily one of the most influential. Their CDs are somewhat rare, sometimes fetching unusually high prices and often adorned with elaborate sleeve and cover artwork.
