Coke Escovedo (Born: Joseph Thomas Escovedo), was a Mexican American from Pittsburg, Calif. and known for his Timbale playing, as well as other percussion instruments. In 1972 along with his brother, Pete Escovedo(Congas/Timbales/percuss.) formed the group called "Azteca", a 25 piece Latin Rock band, which only released 2 Great albums (which are now collectable)..."Azteca" & "Pyramid of the Moon" between the years of 1973 & 1974. Before this, they both played for Santana on 3 albums..."Abraxis", Moonflower and Inner Secrets. Coke Escovedo released three albums on his own, after Azteca broke up in 1974, (the band was too big to get many bookings, which caused financial problems). Coke then released 3 albums on his own..."Coke"(1977) "Disco Fantacy" (1978) and "Comin At Ya" (1979 or 80). Coke Escovedo died at age of 45 in 1986, (rumored to be drug related). His brother Pete Escovedo and his talented children (Sheila E., Juan Escovedo and Peter Michael Escovedo) continue to play with their own bands, and are still making records and performing together.
