Scots-born singer, songwriter and actor Colin Hay is best known as the lead singer of Australian new wave popsters Men at Work.
Hay moved from his native Scotland to the sunnier climes of Australia in 1967, when he was 14. Guitarist and singer Hay formed a duo with Ron Strykert and together they formed Men at Work in 1978. The band’s debut album Business as Usual was a hit. With quirky singles including “Who Can it be Now?” plus the accompanying amusing videos (promoted by the recently launched MTV) the album topped the Billboard Pop charts. They capitalised with a quick follow-up in Cargo and had more hits, including “It’s a Mistake”, but they were unable to build on their success. After another album the band split in 1985, leaving Hay to pursue a solo career of both singing and acting.
Hay’s solo output, commencing with Looking for Jack, failed to scale the height of his Men at Work peak, while his acting career, which started with Men at Work videos, has extended to TV work, both in his adopted homeland and the States.
