Musicians Turned Authors: Tom Morello and Colin Meloy

This week brings news of two of our favorite musicians trying their hands at writing non-autobiographical books. Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello and The Decemberists’ Colin Meloy have both penned stories; Morello a comic book and Meloy a children’s book. Both, perhaps, seem better suited for adults.
Like in his music, Morello is using the comic book medium to speak out against social injustice. According to Rolling Stone, his new series, Orchid, focuses on “a 16-year-old street prostitute who discovers she has a greater calling than what has been imposed on her in a nightmarish world full of ferocious new animal species that prey on humans while the rich harvest the bodies of the poor.”
Meloy has written Wildwood, a story about a young girl who tries to rescue her brother from a band of ne’er do well clowns, successfully ensuring that any child who doesn’t develop a natural fear of those painted faces on their own, now will. The book was illustrated by Meloy’s wife (and Decemberists album artist), Carson Ellis.
According to a bit on The Decemberists’ website, the book is "a world full of warring creatures, peaceable mystics, and powerful figures with the darkest intentions." Eeep.
