Corinne Bailey Rae is a British singer-songwriter whose debut self-titled album topped the UK charts and was a Top 5 smash in the US in 2006. Her second single, "Put Your Records On", reached No.2 on the UK singles chart.
Rae spent her childhood singing in church choirs, and later formed an all-girl indie-rock band called Helen. Though they managed to sign to Roadrunner Records they failed to record an album, and disbanded when the bassist became pregnant. Rae decided to go to University and, while studying for an English Literature degree, she worked as a cloakroom attendant at a jazz club and developed a passion for a whole new genre of music. She started to write jazzy, soulful music and collaborated with The New Mastersounds on the track “Your Love is Mine”, Homecut Directive on “Come the Revolution” and The StiX on “Young and Foolish”.
The collaborations brought her to the attention of the major record labels and in 2005 she released her debut single “Like a Star”. Its parent album Corinne Bailey Rae, was released early the following year. The album was very successful, entering the UK chart at No.1 and spawning four Grammy nominations.
