Beautiful? Not For Courtney Love.
May, 25 2010
In spite of – or perhaps because of – the fact that Courtney Love has Nobody’s Daughter to promote with her band Hole, there have been a lot of Love soundbites recently, many of them salacious. However, an interesting musically-related piece of trivia has recently emerged during her latest interview with MTV.
It seems that Love had her eyes on Beautiful, the song which was eventually made famous by Christina Aguilera. Sadly for Love, Linda Perry -- the writer of the song – had other ideas for the ballad. Love reveals, “In my entire life I’ve never wanted a song fully rendered, that someone else has written – ever… [the song] was 11 years old at the time… and she ended up giving it to Christina Aguilera, but I begged her for it. She said to me at the time… ‘You’re not ready for top 40; you will be. You’ll hate this song because you didn’t write it’ – which is totally true… and then we got into a fierce fight about whether she should give it to Britney [Spears] or Christina. She said, ‘Someday, you and me are gonna write a song that’s better and better suited for you”.
Since then, both Christina and Britney have enjoyed triumphs at the top of the charts, but Courtney? Contrary to Linda Perry’s prediction, she’s still waiting.

Record sales are falling, gas prices are rising and the global economic situation isn't helping anyone make money: so musicians have to be increasingly creative to keep on top of their bills. When Courtney Love hasn't been scrawling amusing rants on her MySpace blog, she's been recording a new album, and apparently its release is imminent. "The artwork is pretty much done," an administrator of her blog wrote, adding "Courtney has 30 million dollars in sponsorships from a prominent feminine hygiene/menstrual company and a prominent tequila company." It's a novel direction, but has she sold out? Until we find out the nature of the 'sponsorship', it's hard to say, but it surely can't be worse than the news that Iggy Pop is currently starring in a series of car insurance adverts in Britain. Iggy, that bare-chested wildman of punk-rock who just about invented stage-diving, appears bare-chested again, this time inviting the viewer to save some coins by visiting his online insurer of choice. Funnily enough, insurance doesn't seem like the kind of thing Iggy's ever cared about before.
