Dan Fogelberg was a US-born singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose music took on many diverse influences, from classical to bluegrass, over his 25 year career.

Fogelberg started singing and song writing when he was young teenager and joined a band while he was still at school. When he went to college in Champaign to study drama, he started playing at a club in town where he was spotted by REO Speedwagon’s manager Irving Azoff. A contract followed and his debut Home Free was released in 1972 to positive reviews, but the lack of a single meant that it didn’t sell well, and he spent the following years as a session musician.

When he did return to the studio for a new album of his own, he was joined by Joe Walsh on production duties. Boosted by the success of “Part of the Plan”, the Souvenirs album went double platinum, and Fogelberg’s career was up and running. Right through the 70s and early 80s his releases were successful, with The Innocent Age providing a critical and creative peak.

His subsequent album releases were met with varying degrees of success, as the industry had moved on and not all of his work met popular acceptance. Fogelberg returned to his singer-songwriter roots for 2003’s Full Circle album. The album was well received, but what looked like a new chapter in his career was brought to a close when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2004.

Fogelberg died in December 2007.
