Danger Mouse

May, 18 2009

It’s going to be one of the best albums never released this year: the Danger Mouse/Sparklehorse collaboration Dark Night of the Soul features a stellar selection of guest artists including Wayne Coyne, Julian Casablancas, Iggy Pop, Frank Black, James Mercer, Gruff Rhys and Nina Persson, and has been hotly anticipated. The album has recently been featured as part of the Exclusive First Listen series on NPR.org and the site reports that the stream is currently one of its most popular pages. However, unspecified legal wrangles with EMI have put the whole project in jeopardy. The modified release plan is to offer a limited edition, hand-numbered 100 page photograph book together with a blank recordable CD-R labelled “For legal reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.” Ouch! So is this feint and dodge around EMI’s legal team really going to work? Danger Mouse has already had legal issues with EMI over his infamous Grey Album, which was never officially released but remains widely available on the internet. A spokesperson for the producer said: "Danger Mouse remains hugely proud of Dark Night of the Soul and hopes that people lucky enough to hear the music, by whatever means, are as excited by it as he is."
