Dark Tranquillity are a melodic death metal band formed in 1989 in Gothenburg, Sweden by vocalist Anders Friden, guitarists Niklas Sundin, Mikael Stanne, and bassist Martin Henriksson and drummer Anders Jivarp. Originally called Septic Broiler, they changed their name to Dark Tranquillity in 1990.
The band developed their sound over early EP releases and what started as thrash metal evolved into melodic death metal or melodeath, as heard on the bands' debut album Skydancer. The album was released in 1993 and followed up with by series of albums including The Gallery and the Projector album, which went on to be nominated for the Swedish Grammi Award.
With personnel changes came a shift in style, and while Projector incorporates electronic elements, the follow up Damage Done was seen as something of a return to thrash. The bands' latest album Fiction was promoted by Dark Tranquillity's participation on the Metal for the Masses tour of the US.
