Dave Gahan
Jun, 1 2009
At the start of May, Depeche Mode kicked off their grandly-named Tour of the Universe, in support of the 12th studio album, Sounds of the Universe. Unfortunately the tour didn’t even make it past the first leg as singer Dave Gahan was struck down with a severe bout of gastroenteritis during the Athens date. Gahan was taken to hospital, and one by one, tour dates were canceled. Though the fans were disappointed, the situation in the hospital was worse; doctors had discovered, not a tummy bug, but a low-grade malignant tumor in Gahan’s bladder. Happily, it seems the tumor has been successfully removed and Gahan is not only expected to make a complete recovery but has announced that he will re-commence the Depeche Mode tour in time for the Leipzig date on June 8. In a statement, the band said, “Dave Gahan sincerely thanks his fans for their support, understanding and patience. Depeche Mode deeply regret any problems or inconveniences the cancellations and postponements may have caused.” Fans with tickets for the canceled show have been advised to hang onto them, pending news of re-scheduled gigs.
