Foo Fighters @ Sasquatch Festival!

Jun, 1 2011

Last Friday night we made the trek out to the Gorge to see the first night of the Sasquatch! and were treated to a monster show by the Foo Fighters. The Foos, fronted by former Nirvana and current Them Crooked Vultures drummer, Dave Grohl, are one of the highest-energy acts touring today. The sextet honestly appears to love, love, love what they do and watching them do it while dressed in flannel was the highpoint of the day. I’m not an avid Foo-fan, but I’m familiar enough with their material to know that they peppered their two-hour set with tunes from their new album, Wasting Light, as well as older tunes. On “Dear Rosemary” they were joined by the legendary alt-hero Bob Mould on bass, the awesomeness of which, sadly, seemed lost on much of the 20-something crowd. It was a highlight and perfectly underscored the festival’s embrace of both old and more recent acts. New tune “White Limo” and “The Pretender” from 2007’s Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace were both strong, as well. Perhaps the most rousing number was the epic, “My Hero,” during which the entire audience sang the chorus. Listen to the NPR podcast of the set by clicking here. -Court

Fresh Pots For Grohl

Mar, 21 2010

Dave Grohl is often referred to as the nicest man in rock, but he’s also one of the busiest. His diary for the coming year is packed; not content with the success of the debut eponymous album of Them Crooked Vultures, he is already working with his illustrious bandmates on a follow-up, and the trio are preparing to take the Vulture show on tour from April. There’s more in store for the Foo Fighters too, with the band planning to start work on a hotly anticipated new studio album in September, and it seems likely that Grohl’s love of collaboration – most recently witnessed on “Watch This” from Slash’s forthcoming eponymous album – will continue to provide him with enjoyable diversionary activities. Many might wonder how he manages it all, but a recently released video gives us a hint – and a cautionary reminder of the dangers of substance abuse. “Fresh Pots” reveals the extent of Grohl’s caffeine addiction and reveals harrowing images of the wired drummer manically beating drums while under the influence of grade-A coffee. The comedic video capitalizes on Grohl’s playfulness and though he should probably be known as the workhorse of rock, it suggests he will never lose that ‘nice man’ tag.

Dave Grohl

Aug, 10 2009

The nicest man in rock, Nirvana sticksman and Foo Fighters supremo Dave Grohl, has had a street named after him. Officials in Warren, Ohio, decided to rebrand the unimaginatively titled Market Alley to David Grohl Alley in honor of the musician, who was born in the city 40 years ago. In a touching ceremony he was told “You already have the key to our hearts, and, to top that, I’m going to give you the key to the city.” In return for the double honor, Grohl treated the appreciative audience to a rendition of three Foo Fighters songs. Grohl now joins a gaggle of musicians who have been similarly feted including several Beethoven and Mozart Streets, The Flaming Lips Alley in Oklahoma City and Run DMC JMJ Way in Hollis, New York. The street naming tradition continues with news that residents of Pinner, England could soon be strolling down Elton John Street, but U2 have fared less well in the US. Their time on the city-map hall of fame was somewhat brief; when West 53rd street was renamed U2 Way, it only remained that way for a week, reverting quickly to the name with which New Yorkers were more familiar.
