David Byrne
May, 18 2009
Former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne celebrated his 57th birthday last week, but he's shown no signs of easing into a quiet retirement. In recent years he's released a widely acclaimed album in partnership with Brian Eno, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today, toured the world, guested on albums by Norman Cook and N.A.S.A., collaborated with Santigold and Dirty Projectors, rigged up disused buildings in Stockholm and New York like musical instruments, and released a live EP for Amnesty International. Phew! Next on Byrne's agenda is the Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, Tennessee, where he's curating one of the stages. "For me it's kind of a wonderful thing to be asked to do," Byrne said, having chosen the aforementioned Santigold and Dirty Projectors, Ani DiFranco, St. Vincent and Katzenjammer to play - as well as his own show. "I wanted to pick acts I'd actually seen perform..." he added, "I thought, 'OK, then, I'm just gonna reel off some names that I like, and we'll see where it goes.'" Byrne's Bonnaroo show takes place on Friday June 12.
