Overview Edit

On an Island is the third solo album by David Gilmour, best known as a lead vocalist and guitarist for Pink Floyd. It was released in the United Kingdom on 6 March 2006, Gilmour's 60th birthday, and in the U.S. the following day. It is Gilmour's first new solo album in 22 years. The song "Castellorizon" received a Grammy Award nomination for best rock instrumental.

The album has achieved platinum status in Canada, selling over 100,000 copies in the first month of its release, and sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide. It also entered the UK album charts at number 1 on the week of its release and made number 6 on the US Billboard 100 album chart.

The album features a sizeable list of well-known guest performers, including Gilmour's wife Polly Samson (who also co-wrote six of the songs), his Pink Floyd bandmate Richard Wright, his regular live bassist Guy Pratt, Phil Manzanera, Rado Klose, Jools Holland, Robert Wyatt, Andy Newmark, David Crosby and Graham Nash.

The album was subsequently re-released in November 2006 with an additional bonus DVD of live material, recorded at three different venues in the spring of 2006.

This is NOT Pink Floyd. David Gilmour doesn't want it to be Pink Floyd. But it is a fantastic album by an amazing artist. It is best appreciated listening undisturbed start to finish with headphones on. David has gone all out in many ways... his web site gave tickets to see him perform on the Jay Leno show (which I was lucky enough to be a part of), he performed the first concert promoting his new album at the Mermaid Theater for lucky fans who won tickets from his web site. Later the Mermaid sh…

3 stars It's Gilmour, so it's great-but not his finest hour!
While nice to have a copy of this DVD (as indeed it is always enjoyable to own anything featuring Gilmour) the quality here is rather suspect in places (to put it mildly). The opening track from the forthcoming "Remember That Night" collection ("Take a Breath") is very grainy, with unacceptable levels of picture noise. Having been at the HD launch at the Odeon Leicester Square, London a couple of weeks ago, I am pleased to say that the final version is infinitely sharper. The Abbey Road take of …
