David Reilly (May 5, 1971 – October 16, 2005), as singer and songwriting/production partner in the electro-rock band God Lives Underwater (GLU), spent the better part of the 1990s as a producer and touring artist, first signed by Rick Rubin to American Recordings in 1993.
American went on to release GLU's first album, a self titleded EP called GLU, and second album Empty, which spawned minor radio hits "No More Love" and "All Wrong", the former as a single from the soundtrack to the hit Keanu Reeves film Johnny Mnemonic (film).
GLU then made a move to 1500 /A&M, who went on to release their third albumLife in the So-Called Space Age, which generated the hit, "From Your Mouth". The single enjoyed play on alternative rock stations and MTV alike, and saw the band hitting the road for several years of mostly sold out shows alongside notable artists including KMFDM, Korn, Stabbing Westward, Life of Agony, Filter, Far, Type O Negative, Genitorturers, Deftones, No Doubt, and Sublime.
God Lives Underwater's 4th and final album, Up Off The Floor was released in September 2004 to poor sales but rave reviews from fans and critics. One track from the recording sessions of Up Off The Floor, a cover of David Bowies' "Fame" made it into the film 15 Minutes with a music video released to help promote the track, and a new album. The band only played one show to promote the album at The Roxy in CA. God Lives Underwater officially disbanded after that show and the release of the album, with Jeff Turzo moving on to his new band Wired All Wrong and David beginning his road towards his solo career and other "side projects".
In addition to his repertoire as a writer and vocalist, Reilly was a multi-instrumentalist and producer with synthesis/sampling knowledge, and with his GLU partner Jeff Turzo stayed busy with other production and remix projects as well, including remixes for Skinny Puppy, Rob Zombie and Messiah, and organizing and contributing to 1998's For the Masses: A Tribute To Depeche Mode which also featured tracks from Deftones, Smashing Pumpkins, Failure, The Cure and Monster Magnet.
In 2001 David released a solo album under the band name "Robot Teen America" titled "Living In Syn" which was 4 untitled instrumental songs. Each CD was numbered and signed by David and only available through the internet.
In 2002 David started the rock band "Fluzee" and they released 1 album titled "7" before breaking up the following year.
2004 saw the release of GLU's Up Off The Floor, released worldwide in June on Megaforce/Locomotive. 2004 also saw a short solo acoustic tour by Reilly, mostly along the east coast (including stops in Cleveland, Akron, Detroit, Boston, & New York City), in support of his Inside (which due to timing issues actually wasn't released until the end of the tour). 2005 was to see Reilly's return to touring in support of unreleased "How Humans R(x)" album.
David Reilly died unexpectedly at 5:15am on October 16, 2005 from complications of a coma brought on by pain medication for an abscessed tooth. He was 34 years old. Tour dates were scheduled at the time of his death, and the album was left unfinished, which was tentatively scheduled to be finished and released in March 2006 with guest vocalists filling in on a few incomplete tracks.
"How Humans R(x)" was brought back to life in 2008 and was released in December, 2009 with only 100 physical copies of the album being printed and sold exclusively online. A digital version of the album will be released to iTunes and Amazon.com MP3store in April, 2010 with an extra bonus track not on the physical version of the album.
