Biography

Edit

The members of the Deftones had been friends since school. They worked tirelessly to bring their sound to the gig-going public, often touring with Korn whom they had befriended. Spotted by Maverick Records, they signed and released their first album Adrenaline in 1995 and by 1999 the album was gold and had built up a comfortable collection of good reviews.

Building on that measured success, they released Around the Fur in 1997. It was while working with them on this album that Max Cavalera (Sepultura) was inspired to form Soulfly. Conversely, collaboration with DJ Crook on an acoustic remix of “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)” inspired Chino Moreno to form the gentle side-project Team Sleep.

White Pony was released in 2000, debuting at No.3 in the Billboard charts. It went on to achieve platinum status and win a Grammy. This was a success consolidated by their 2003 release Deftones, as it lodged in the Billboard Top 100 for nine weeks. Saturday Night Wrist, their most recent album, was released in 2006 though it failed to achieve the same initial success of their previous albums.

In addition to their CD releases Deftones have achieved significant exposure as a result of their tracks being used on film soundtracks (including The Crow: City of Angels) and video games.

Deftones Rep For Milli Vanilli

Apr, 22 2010

It was a throwaway comment during an interview with Ohio’s WEBN FM, but when Deftones were asked if they’d rather tour with Milli Vanilli or New Kids on the Block, frontman Chino Moreno almost chose the infamous pop-imposters over the not-quite-so-boyish boy band. “I love Milli Vanilli. A lot of people think I'm joking but I love that record. I always think ‘Wow, wouldn't it be neat if they made another record?’ Because the guys who really recorded it are still around.” He’s right; while the young and pretty Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus formed the face of the band, the real voices were proved by a group of uncredited singers. Sadly, even after the scandal broke, and an opportunity formed for the real singers to form as The Real Milli Vanilli, equivalent fame eluded them. Chino ripped yet another chance away from them when he reconsidered his original choice for rock ‘n roll reasons. Choosing NKOTB he explained, “New Kids are going to have a gang of chicks. They're going to be all about our age, who don't get out of the house so much because they have kids or whatever. It's going to be cougar time.” Deftones are expected to tour soon in support of their forthcoming May 4 release Diamond Eyes, but there’s no word yet on who’ll really be supporting them.
