Dionne Warwick emerged from a background providing soulful backing vocals for artists such as Ben E. King, to eventually taking the lead in singing the beautiful pop songs that Burt Bacharach and Hal David would write for her. She enjoyed a hugely successful career, becoming the second most successful female performer of the past 50 years in terms of Hot 100 hits (behind Aretha Franklin). "Anyone Who Had A Heart", her third single, kick-started her career, reaching No.8 in the charts, before follow-up "Walk On By" (1964) was a hit all over the world and became one of her signature songs.
Other huge hits by Warwick in the 60s included "Alfie", "I Say A Little Prayer", "(Theme From) Valley Of The Dolls", "Do You Know The Way To San José?", "This Girl's In Love With You" and "I'll Never Fall In Love Again". "I'll Never Love This Way Again" was a 1979 smash hit, sandwiched between two collaborative Hot 100 chart-toppers: "Then Came You" (with the Spinners in 1974), and "That's What Friends Are For" (with Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder in 1985). In the 90s Warwick briefly became an infomercial host, and continued to record and perform occasionally.
