Rapper and actor DMX's highly successful career has been credited with revitalising hardcore rap.
DMX came to public attention after collaborations on tracks by LL Cool J., Ma$e and The L.O.X.. These helped to pave the way for the release of his debut, gold-selling single, "Get At Me Dog". At the same time as he was trying to launch his music career, he was also acting. He had a part in the hip-hop film Belly, which featured several other artists including Nas and Method Man. He also provided some music for the soundtrack.
His debut solo album It's Dark and Hell is Hot was the first of a straight run of five albums to debut at No.1 on the Billboard 200 (his sixth release disappointingly debuted at No.2). All of his albums have gone on to at least platinum sales. His third album And Then There Was X was the best-selling, promoted by the singles "What's My Name?" and "Party Up!", his first Top 10 R&B record.
Grand Champ was supposed to be his retirement album, but he came back to release Year of the Dog... Again, which missed a No.1 debut by a few thousand sales. He is working with Swizz Beats and Pharrell on his next studio album, due for release in 2008.
In addition to his solo career, DMX has also contributed tracks to the Ryff Ryders releases including Ryde or Die Vol.1, one of the best-selling rap compilations ever. His acting career has involved roles in Romeo Must Die with the late R&B star Aaliyah, the Steven Seagal film Exit Wounds, and he is currently working on Belly 2.
