Overview Edit

Lost Souls is the debut album by the band Doves, and was released on April 3, 2000. The album was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2000, but lost out to Badly Drawn Boy's The Hour of Bewilderbeast. The band had previously played as Badly Drawn Boy's backing band, having played on the Badly Drawn Boy songs "Pissing in the Wind" and "Disillusion," as well as Badly Drawn Boy's 1999 non-album single "Road Movie."

Doves were originally known as Sub Sub, making disco/techno music. An electrical fire in their recording studio destroyed three years of their material. It was shortly after this point that they decided to change direction and reform themselves as Doves. This album followed soon after Doves released three preceding EPs: Cedar EP, Sea EP, and Here It Comes.

The US release contains three additional bonus tracks: "Darker," "Valley," and "Zither" (all of which were previously released on singles and EPs in the UK). "Darker" was featured in the second episode of the FOX drama series 24 and also in the movie Dandelion.

5 stars One of the year's best releases
When I first heard of Doves, they were lumped into the Travis/Radiohead category that every British rock band seems to be lumped into these days. After listening to Lost Souls, this comparison is not quite accurate. Now, Radiohead has been my favorite band for quite a while, but their styles are very different. Missing from Lost Souls is the angst of The Bends and OK Computer, but it keeps the epic scope of those albums. Doves have a very unique way of blending dark riffs with beautiful melodies…

3 stars Promising Debut!
Just got the debut C.D. from British group,Doves. The C.D. has 12 tracks which show that the group have plenty of promise, but they haven't quite made a masterpiece just yet. Many of the songs have very long instrumental intros, which sort of reminded me of the Mogwai C.D.-'Come on die young'.The album is quite atmostpheric in a dark late night kind of way.Song 4-'Sea Song' comes as a surprise as it's quite a jaunty sing-a-long tune.Another very catchy song is the aptly titled 'Melody Calls'.The gro…
