Dr. Dre’s Upcoming Release Will Be His Last
Nov, 24 2010
After his highly anticipated album, Detox, comes out in early 2011, hip-hop tastemaker Dr. Dre has announced he’s hanging up the mic.
In the upcoming double December/January issue of XXL Magazine, Dre explains that he spends five to six days a week in the studio, sometimes up to 16-hours at a stretch. After close to 30 years in the music business, he’s ready to slow down.
“The only part that has been pushing me back is just the fact that I’m getting older... and being able to identify with the younger audience,” said the soon-to-be 46 year-old.
In the interview, Dre revealed that although he would continue to focus on scouting and producing new talent, much the way he did for Snoop Dogg in the 1990s, Detox will indeed be his final full-length album.
But is this hype for an album that’s been in the works for close to 12 years? After all, hip-hop artists are notorious for crying wolf about retirement. Jay-Z came back with a new album after only two years, and 50 Cent claimed he’d retire if his release, Curtis, didn’t outsell Kanye West’s Graduation.
"As far as me going into the mic booth, that s*** is over," says the sonic architect behind some of the past 25 years’ heaviest, funk-laden beats. "I don’t see myself doing it the way I’m doing it now."
