Overview Edit

"Big Thing" is Duran Duran's fifth studio album. It was released in 1988 on EMI/Capitol Records and was co-produced by Daniel Abraham (who had mixed & engineered their previous album "Notorious") and Jonathan Elias.

Regarded by many critics as their most experimental album to date, it featured a much more dance-orientated style of music compared to their earlier "New Romantic" synthpop material. This change of direction wasn't particularly well received by the music press or public, as it turned out to be their worst performing release to date, reaching number 15 in the UK and number 24 in the US. The first two singles released from it "I Don't Want Your Love" and "All She Wants Is", sold reasonably well (the former reached number 4 in the US and 14 in Britain, the latter #22 and #9) but the third single "Do You Believe In Shame" fared less well, just scraping into the UK top 30 and failing to reach the top 40 in the US. They would not have another top 10 chart single in either country until the release of "Ordinary World" in 1993.

The album has been reissued four times since its original release, most recently in 2010 as a limited edition box set with a variety of extra b-sides & remixes and a live concert DVD.

5 stars Overlooked and underrated
I was a die-hard Duranie in the 80s, but felt like I got ripped off when I plunked down money for Pop Trash and Medazzaland. I picked up Big Thing in a used CD store and felt like I had stumbled across undiscovered treasure. Very mellow, more like Arcadia's So Red the Rose than Astronaut (or even the wedding album). Like the other reviewers mentioned, Edge of America, Palomino, and Too Late Marlene are haunting, beautiful tracks. It's one of my favorite CDs to listen to at work---quiet enough to…

3 stars 60% good
This album has four rather silly pop singles on it, taking up almost all of side one(I have it on tape). Too Late Marlene is a lovely song though, too bad it wasn't on side two so I could avoid side one all together. Side two on the other hand is really good, full of rich and beautifull pieces of music, emotional, thoughtfull and meaningfull. I would recommend the album for those.
