Overview Edit

"Medazzaland" is Duran Duran's ninth studio album, released on 14 October 1997. It was the follow up to the poorly received covers album Thank You and would prove to be the band's last release on EMI/Capitol Records (they would officially leave the label in early 1999).

Recording for the album did not go smoothly, with bassist John Taylor leaving before the recording sessions for it were completed (only 4 songs on the finished album feature him). As a result, the album was released behind schedule and only in North America & Japan - plans to release it in Europe were initially postponed and eventually shelved altogether when it failed to make a significant impression on the US Billboard album chart (stalling at number 58). It is therefore notable for being their only album never to be officially released in their native Britain on CD, although it has been available there as a digital download via iTunes since July 2008.

The single "Out of My Mind" (which featured on the soundtrack for the movie "The Saint") was however released in the UK and enjoyed moderate commercial success, reaching number 21 on the singles chart. "Electric Barbarella", (the other single released from the album in the US) was also notable due to it being the first single ever made available as a digital download via the Internet. It reached number 52 on the Billboard chart in November 1997 and would subsequently make number 23 on the UK singles chart in January 1999 following its inclusion on their 1998 "Greatest" compilation album.

5 stars Their best, most consistent, most perfectly realized work
If `Rio' was the best album from the original lineup of Duran Duran, then Medazzaland is the most accomplished, mature and effective album from the Warren Cuccurullo era (I'm counting `Wedding Album' to `Pop Trash' since he wasn't allowed to write on Notorious, Big Thing or Liberty even though he was the guitar player).

Meddazzaland has all the pop hooks you would expect from Duran Duran, but there's a lyrical and musical maturity, musical vocabulary and attention to detail hinted at in previou…

I wanted to like this album more than I did. I had avoided buying it for some reason when it came out (I did Pop Trash too). I bought "Astronaut" and fell in love with Duran Duran again, and thus was inspired to purchase "Medazzaland" and "Pop Trash". This album has many great reviews here at Amazon so I had high hopes. Not a total let down, "Big Bang Generation", "Electric Barbarella", "Out of My Mind" and "Midnight Sun" are excellent tracks and worth the 10 or 15 dollars, but it just wasn't th…
