Overview Edit

"Rio" is Duran Duran's second studio album. Originally released in May 1982 on EMI Records, it gave the band their second major hit in their native Britain (reaching number 2 on its second week of release). It also topped the Australian ARIA album charts but initially failed to make a significant impact in the USA. However, after the band enlisted the help of producer David Kershenbaum to remix several of the album's songs, a second version was released in the US in November 1982. This edition proved much more popular with American audiences and went on to reach number 6 on the Billboard chart there in March 1983, staying on the chart for more than 2 years and eventually gaining Double Platinum status.

Of the various singles released from the album, 3 would enjoy significant chart success - "Hungry Like The Wolf" reached number 5 in the UK and number 3 in the US, whilst "Save A Prayer" made number 3 in the UK and the single version of the title track "Rio" reached number 9 in Britain and 14 in the US.

The album has been reissued several times over the years, notably in 2001 in remastered format to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its release and a 2009 2-disc Special Edition that includes all of the Kershenbaum US remixes and various "Night Version" extended mixes & demos in addition to the original 9 UK tracks.

5 stars Why doesn't my generation have music like this!?
I wasn't born yet when this record was released, so I missed out on the Duran Duran heyday. But the other day, I heard this incredible song on the radio called Rio. No doubt in my mind, the best song I've ever heard. Its just utterly perfect in every way! The musicianship is phenominal. John Taylor's killer bassline, combined with Nick Rhodes arpegiated synthesiser riffs created one of the best songs ever. Listening to Duran Duran is like watching a really awesome movie. The songs take you on a …

3 stars The album that made Duran Duran the Fab Five
What can I say about this album that hasn't been said? If you are buying the CD to replace a vinyl that has seen better days, be prepared. This CD is different. I don't understand why Duran Duran has to remix everything several times, but the album is definitly different. Most of the album was remixed for the US release, the most noteable is "my own way" which suffered terribly through the transition. Get the original version on the video album. "hungry like the wolf" may have reverted to it's o…
