Overview Edit

"Seven and the Ragged Tiger" is Duran Duran's third studio album, released in November 1983. It would end up being the last studio album released by the band's original lineup until 2004's Astronaut.

Written mainly in the south of France and recorded on the Caribbean island of Monserrat (with Ian Little & Alex Sadkin sharing production duties), the album continued where its predecessor Rio had left off in commercial terms, going straight to the top of the UK album charts (going platinum only a week after release) and reaching number 8 on the US Billboard 100 (also going platinum, despite receiving some decidedly mixed reviews. It also spawned 3 major hit singles: "Union of the Snake" (a number 3 hit in both the US and UK), "New Moon on Monday" (another top 10 performer on both sides of the Atlantic) and "The Reflex". The band had wanted to release the latter track as the lead single, but had been discouraged from doing so by their record company - however, after being remixed by Nile Rodgers and put out, it proved to be their best selling single to date, topping the charts on both sides of the Atlantic and also in mainland Europe.

The album has been reissued several times over the years, including a 20th Anniversary remastered version in 2003 and two different 2010 versions - a 2-CD digipak and twin CD+DVD boxset. Both of the latter include additional b-sides, remixes, live tracks and the non-album single "Is There Something I Should Know".

Following the release of the album, the band would go on to record the Arena live album during their "Sing Blue Silver" world tour and release another successful non album single "Wild Boys" before going their separate ways to work on side projects. The supposedly temporary split would though last for nearly 20 years, as both Roger and Andy Taylor would end up leaving the band prior to the release of the next album "Notorious" in 1986.

4 stars 22 years later...
I'm a Duran Duran fan from way, way back. Like many of the reviewers here, I always felt that one of the band's strong suits had to be Simon Le Bon's lyrics. Nowhere is his gift more evident, to me, than on "Seventh Stranger." Here's just one example from that song: "A year of Sundays seems to have drifted right by, I could have sworn, in one evening."

I do think the album deserves a repeat listen lo, these many years later. I always felt that DD got a bum rap, simply because they came in on th…

3 stars In their own words:
John Taylor: "We were just drunk [on our new-found success] by this point. We were so into living the dream...and part of the dream was that you made at least one of your albums on the French Riveria."

Nick Rhodes: "I thought the thing was never going to get finished. It really took a long time. There was a lot of different feelings in the band about the direction we should take."

Simon LeBon: "We started off in the south of France, then we went to Mt. Surratt, came back to the U.K. briefly an…
