Kentucky-born singer-songwriter Dwight Yoakam is best known for his two Country chart-topping singles, “The Streets of Bakersfield” (with Buck Owens) and “I Sang Dixie”, and for his triple platinum album This Time (1993). He is also an actor, and has featured in Panic Room and The Wedding Crashers among others.
Yoakam dropped out of University and moved to Nashville to pursue a music career. With little success there he moved to LA and gigged in front of rock and punk audiences, until he was ready to release debut album Guitars, Cadillacs, etc., etc.. (1986). Guitars… went double platinum, and together with Hillbilly Deluxe (1987) established Yoakam as a hot new country artist. Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room (1988) included two Country chart-toppers, “The Streets of Bakersfield” (with Buck Owens) and “I Sang Dixie”. 1993 album This Time became his most successful yet: boosted by “Ain’t That Lonely Yet”, “A Thousand Miles From Nowhere” and “Fast as You”, the album achieved sales of over three million.
Yoakam has been touring and recording since, but to less success. In 2007 he released a tribute album to Buck Owens, called Dwight Sings Buck.
