Bay area rapper/businessman E-40's influential career has helped form the identity of West Coast rap and the hyphy scene in particular. Although he has not had the profile of some of his contemporaries, he is highly respected within the industry.
E-40 decided to pursue a career in rap in his mid-teens, he formed rap group The Click with his cousin B-Legit, along with his brother D-Shot and his sister Suga T. He established the Sick Wid It record label for their debut release, the Lets Side EP in 1989, after the release of their debut album, he got a contract with Jive Records (the first of the Bay Area rappers to do so). Along with other rappers, including Too $hort and Spice 1 he is credited with setting the tone for the West Coast scene.
His first big commercial and critical success came from In A Major Way, which features collaborations with 2pac and Mac Mall, the album made the top 20 of the Billboard 200 and No.2 on the top R&B/hip-hop album charts. Subsequent releases were well received, but it was a move to Warner which brought his greatest success when he and Lil John released My Ghetto Report Card in 2006. The singles "Tell Me When To Go" and "U and Dat" provided him with his first Billboard Hot 100 entries for almost 10 years.
