Eagles

According to the Recording Industry Association of America, The Eagles’ 1976-released Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 is the all-time best-selling album in the United States, with 29 million certified sales. But recent events have meant that its place at pole position is in danger of being usurped by Michael Jackson’s Thriller, as his death has resulted in phenomenal posthumous sales. Thriller had already certified 28 million sales, and is now nipping at the heels of the country-rock classic having sold at least a few hundred-thousand in the last couple weeks. Declining CD sales might mean that no new record is ever able to catch up with either of those sales figures, but Brit band Coldplay are doing their darnedest to plug the gap with digital sales. Viva La Vida has had a difficult time lately as a result of having to dodge plagiarism claims, but it has contributed hugely to Coldplay’s success in becoming the first artist to sell more than one million digital albums in the United States. The band’s precedent for digital domination was set in 2005 when third album X&Y became the first digital album available for pre-order, and they were the first band to sell one million digital tracks too. They have a long way to go before their digital sales get close to the physical sales of The Eagles and MJ, but initial signs are good as the digital revolution gathers pace.
