Edwyn Collins Is Raring To Go

Feb, 11 2010

Five years ago, former Orange Juice frontman and singer of “A Girl Like You” (1994) Edwyn Collins suffered two cerebral hemorrhages, leaving him unable to walk, talk or perform other basic tasks. Although the doctors’ prognosis wasn’t encouraging, he’s been battling ever since to recover his basic motor skills and resume his music career. In 2007 he returned to the stage, and while he still struggled to walk or talk, his ability to sing was unaffected. Now Collins feels able to contribute a newly recorded track “I’m Feeling Lucky” to the compilation release Mavis, which celebrates the work of R&B singer Mavis Staples. “It's the first song after my stroke,” Collins told the BBC, “it was difficult in a way but the lyrics are simple and direct.” The best news of all is that Collins has recovered enough to begin writing a new full-length album. “It’s coming slowly, my lyrics, eleven new songs, simple new songs, I'm getting there,” Collins said. “I’m still learning five years down the line. I've got a long way to go, I'm getting there slowly, it's taking a long time and I’m finally raring to go.”
