Overview Edit

Beautiful Freak is a 1996 album by musician Mark Oliver Everett, his first using a full band and the name Eels (in an attempt to get the records in the same general location in the stores as his previous works under the name "E"). It was the first album released worldwide by DreamWorks Records, and contains a mix of lo-fi, rock and pop songs including the singles "Novocaine for the Soul" and "Susan's House". "My Beloved Monster" was later used in the soundtrack of Shrek, and "Beautiful Freak" was used in the soundtrack of Hellboy 2: The Golden Army and Monsters, Inc.

Awesome experimental debut for Butch, Tommy, and "E". I bought this album recently after seeing the Abandoned Pools in concert (Tommy is the lead singer) but hadn't heard anything off of it besides "Novacaine" on the radio and "My Beloved Monster" from Shrek. Boy was I missing out.

I'm more of an 'experimental' Eels fan; albums like Beautiful Freak and Electro-shock are better in my opinion just because of the extreme diversity between songs. From the quasi-piano balled of the title track to the…

Coming out when the 2nd-gen alterna-acts we're just catching wind, Eels debut has demonstrated a longer importance then many less distinguished acts of the time. While there is not enough personality to warrant high praise (the band autopilot's in their drearily hip mode a little too often), chief songwriter "E" demonstrates keen dark-pop chops by way of piano or guitar, creating a few hauntingly upbeat, not to mention sardonically lyricized snapshots amongst less memorable, but still competent tracks.
