Rocket Man Blasts Billy Joel in Rolling Stone
Feb, 3 2011
Often we rely on our oldest friends to tell it like it is, but did Elton John overstep his buddy-boundaries when he called out long-time tour partner, Billy Joel’s habits, in the new Rolling Stone cover article?
“At the end of the day, he's coasting," John said. "I always say, 'Billy, can't you write another song?' It's either fear or laziness. It upsets me. Billy's a conundrum. We've had so many canceled tours because of illnesses and various other things, alcoholism. He's going to hate me for this, but every time he goes to rehab they've been rehab light. When I went to rehab, I had to clean the floors. He goes to rehab where they have TVs. I love you, Billy, and this is tough love… You should be able to do something better than what you're doing now."
The duo has co-headlined tours for 15 years, but last year Joel canceled a tour for unspecified reasons, later having double hip replacement surgery. At the time, John said he was “heartbroken” about the cancelled “Face 2 Face” tour; Joel replied that the tour had never been booked.
Joel responded to Elton’s most recent alcoholism accusations in a statement, "I've worked with Elton for such a long time and I've enjoyed our relationship too much to let something as random as these comments change my affection for him. Elton is just being Elton."

Elton John Becomes a Dad at 63
Dec, 29 2010
Sir Elton John and his husband, David Furnish, became proud parents to a baby boy on Christmas day. The baby was born via surrogate and couple has declined to specify which of them is the child’s biological father.
Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John was born in California, and is the first child for both 63-year-old John 48-year-old Furnish. The couple married in 2005 having been together since the early 1990s.
In a joint statement, the new parents told USMagazine.com that "Zachary is healthy and doing well" and they are "overwhelmed with happiness and joy at this very special moment."
Their son's middle name is a possible nod to John's song "Levon," whose lyrics - “He was born a pauper to a pawn on a Christmas Day” - were written by the musician’s longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin and inspired by Levon Helm, the drummer and singer for The Band. The song appeared on John’s 1971 Madman Across The Water.
According to the Daily Mail, the couple had first attempted to adopt an HIV-positive child from the Ukraine last year. The adoption of the 14 month-old boy was rejected on the grounds of John's age, that the child had a mother and therefore technically was not an orphan, and the fact that the country does not recognize civil marriages. John then made a commitment to support the boy financially.

Rocket Man Blasts At TV Talent Shows
Oct, 20 2010
One of the most successful pop artists ever, Sir Elton John, believes today's songwriters are "pretty awful.” “Pop music isn’t very inspiring,” he continued, and talent shows like American Idol breed a lack of integrity and the rigorous drive necessary to sustain a career.
In an interview with Britain's Radio Times magazine, the 63-year-old singer explained, “I was in a band at 17, became a songwriter with Bernie Taupin and wasn't successful until we'd had six years of hard graft and disappointment, as well as great times.”
While talent shows might generate huge network ratings, "TV vaults you to superstardom and then you have to back it up, which is hard," John said. "It's important [pop stars] write their own songs, so they're not at the mercy of anyone," he said. “The only way to sustain a career is to pay your dues.”
An admitted fan of young female artists Amy Winehouse and Lady Gaga, he added, "I'm not a fan of talent shows. I probably wouldn't have lasted if I'd gone on one. I was asked to judge American Idol… I won't slag anyone off.” Television has “become boring, a***-paralyzing brain crippling," he said.
John is releasing a new album this week, The Union, a collaboration with his musical hero Leon Russell featuring appearances from Neil Young, Brian Wilson and Robert Randolph, among others guests.

Sir Elton: "Jesus Was Gay"
Feb, 20 2010
Sir Elton John has risked the wrath of his Christian fans by saying that Jesus was gay in an interview with Parade magazine.
The flamboyant English singer-songwriter said "I think Jesus was a compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems. Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving. I don't know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East -- you're as good as dead."
The quote has already been denounced by online Christians, but Elton may be forgiven in time. At the height of The Beatles' fame, John Lennon infamously quipped "We're more popular than Jesus now," a comment that alienated Christian fans and even led to death threats. Last week, the Vatican's official newspaper named The Fab Four's Revolver as its No.1 album ever, suggesting no hard feelings remain.

Elton's Creative Juices Still Flowing
Dec, 16 2009
In his day he was a self-confessed party animal who really knew how to live the rock and roll lifestyle, but these days he’s content to play Las Vegas with Billy Joel and settle into married life with his partner. Now, more than thirty years since his biggest success, 1973’s magnum opus Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, there are signs that Elton John is still pushing the envelope of his musicality.
According to reports, Elton has plans for a significant genre shift, with his new release veering away from classic piano-rock towards contemporary synth-pop. He’s working with production duo P’Nau, who are behind one of Australia’s biggest new acts Empire Of The Sun. A source close to the 62 year old singer told The Sun newspaper: "Elton says he's writing his most exciting new stuff for years -- possibly decades. Working with P'Nau has got the creative juices flowing again." While there’s no word yet on a possible release date, this certainly seems like a project worth keeping an eye on.

The big winner of the night at the Tony Awards was the musical Billy Elliot, a play about a young lad who fulfills his dream to become a ballet dancer instead of facing a grim future in the declining coal industry of 1980s industrial Britain. The movie of Billy Elliot first aired in 2000, and was turned into a musical by Lee Hall with music by Elton John. Sir Elton’s interest in adapting the movie into a musical was inspired by his own experiences as a child, during which he shunned his father’s expectations in favor of a life on the stage. He revealed that "I was always trying to please my father, but he really never got what I wanted to be and disapproved of it completely. He was a product of the war and wanted me to have a safe job in a bank or an accountancy firm. And that wasn't for me." The musical opened in London’s West End in 2005 and hit Broadway in October 2008, where it received rave reviews and defied the prevailing economic downturn by setting records at the box office. In all, the production earned an record-equaling fifteen Tony Award nominations and won ten of them, including Best Musical.

Elton John

After an astonishing five year run encompassing 241 shows, Elton John is leaving Las Vegas. His tenure at Caesar's Palace came to an end on April 23, but he won’t have long to recharge his batteries; on May 2 he packs his bags to embark on a tour which will take in the US, Canada and Europe. The five-time Grammy winning singer has been making music for much of his 62 years, and his extensive back catalog of material -- from the zany spectacle days of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road to the AOR of latter years -- has won many fans throughout the decades. His most recent release was a return to the story of Captain Fantastic and the Dirt Brown Cowboy, on The Captain and the Kid (2006), which was widely considered to be among his best albums for years. The fact that the Rocket Man was able to fill Vegas for so long makes the King of Pop’s 50-night run in London seem paltry in comparison; though we doubt many of the million Jacko fans with tickets for the London series feel that way.

Elton John

Next time you're in a ticket store, look out for the 'Buy One Get One Free' deal on the Piano Rock shelf. Elton John and Billy Joel have announced that they plan to go on tour together in 2009, for a tour that will apparently last "more than two years." The duo have already collaborated several times, on the Face To Face tours, teaming up for duets and playing each others’ hits, and they've has always been rapturously welcomed by fans. However, it’s going to be hard to fit it all in: in the same interview with GQ magazine, Elton announced a host of other plans, including writing a film musical for Ben Stiller, another Vegas show, a tour with Ray Cooper, and an "orchestral thing." Elton said "I love going out and playing. I’ve never loved playing so much as I do now," and with that kind of workload, we don’t doubt him at all.
