Engineers formed in London in 2003. The band's sound is often described as a mixture of psychedelia, shoegazing and post-rock, though they themselves claim their influences range from The Cocteau Twins to Curtis Mayfield. Sweeney has remarked that "We've always said if more people started taking acid we'd clean up."
