Biography

Edit

Erykah Badu broke onto the scene with her debut album, 1997's Baduizm, and was instantly hailed as a key figure in nu-soul. It was widely praised and hit No.2 on the Billboard 200, eventually selling over three million copies and winning two Grammy Awards. Her second album was a live album, the imaginatively titled Live (1997), which went double platinum. She collaborated with The Roots and took time off to look after her first child. Mama's Gun (2000) was another million-seller, and the single "Bag Lady" topped the R&B charts for seven weeks. Badu won another Grammy for her collaboration with partner Common on the Top 10 single "Love Of My Life" in 2003. Worldwide Underground followed soon afterwards, reaching No.3 on the album charts and spawning four more Grammy nominations.

Erykah Badu says she has got three albums in the works, the first of which, New Amerykah Part One (4th World War), was released at the beginning of 2008.

Nude Erykah Invites Character Assassination

Apr, 1 2010

What is the purpose of a music video? Is it just a vehicle for a song, is it to gain the artist attention, or should it be an artistic statement of its own? Erykah Badu achieved all three with her video for new single "Window Seat," which shows the soul star strolling through Dealey Plaza, Dallas, shedding her clothes, and then falling as if shot on the same spot where President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. Some commentators have criticized the clip as distasteful, and Badu could have faced up to a year in jail if she'd been caught and arrested for public nudity. But most fans and bloggers seem to like the video, which was shot in one take a few weeks ago. "I tied it in a way that compared the assassination to the character assassination one would go through after showing his or her self completely," Badu explained to Dallas Morning News. "She was already prepared to deal with whatever consequences because she knew she believed in what she was doing," director Chike told MTV, adding that bail money had already been collected in case the police had arrived. And amid all the talk about the rights and wrongs of the video is the news that Badu's fifth studio album, New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh), is out this week. She's a shrewd lady.

Erykah Badu

Feb, 4 2009

Congratulations to Erykah Badu and partner Jay Electronica who welcomed their first child together into the world on Sunday. In what may be seen as an innovative new way for musicians to interact with their most loyal fans (or, as the slightly weird sharing of a very private moment,) Erykah and Jay thoughtfully kept their fans up to date with the event through their Twitter feeds. "Morning, I'm in labor" Erykah posted early on Sunday, before handing over to Jay to take over the commentary. "Labor has begun. Stand back" he wrote, continuing with incremental updates on her progress until the crucial revelation: "I see the head, full of hair." Soon after, Jay stated "It's the happiest day of my life," and Erykah sent another micro-message expressing relief that the five-hour ordeal was over. Both musicians have almost 5000 fans signed up to their Twitter feeds, who must now be hoping they don't hear about every time the baby girl needs her diaper changed.
