Overview Edit

Album of the Year is the sixth and final studio album by Faith No More. It was released on June 3, 1997 and was the only album to feature the band's final guitarist Jon Hudson.

The album was generally received with moderate praise from both critics and fans.

The title of this album displays the band's sense of irony, as the majority of the members of Faith No More were ultimately unhappy with the outcome of Album of the Year and the direction it had taken them. Vocalist Mike Patton was quoted as saying that Faith No More's demise could be partially related to a mutual feeling of artistic futility as a group: "We were starting to make bad music."

During touring in support of Album of the Year, Faith No More frequently wore suits during performances.

The album sleeve did not feature printed lyrics; however, Mike Patton and Billy Gould did submit official lyrics to fnm.com.

As of July 2007, the album has sold 213,000 copies in the U.S., significantly lower than the band's other albums.

In other charts it faired much better, peaking at #1 in Australia and New Zealand. It also went Platinum in Australia for sales of more than 70,000 copies.

The album only had minimal impact in the UK charts but it did go Gold for sales of more than 100,000 copies.

The biggest downfall for this album was perhaps in the US where sales were significantly lower than previous efforts, though it still managed to sell a million copies worldwide.

Track 4 is listed on promo copies as "Naked in Front of This Computer", it is unknown whether this is a working title or a mistake.

The first pressing of the Australian version included a bonus remix disc.

4 stars Compelling and unique
A return to form for the uniquely talented Faith No More which turned out to be their last record before breaking up. Although not reaching the dizzy heights of 1992?s ?Angel Dust?, there are a fair share of classic Faith No More tracks on offer. Opener ?Collision? sets the mood for the album with its unpredictable and jerking metal. Second track ?Strip Search? goes into a completely different direction to confuse the listener even more with its space-age landscape. The album?s greatest strength…

3 stars Decent last hurrah.
Faith No More's last album is a bit of an enigma-- for a band known for their metal sound, its the ballads that in fact stand strongest on this one, with vocalist Mike Patton showing a remarkable range of voice, both in pitch and tone, from a sort of neo-soul sound to a Waits-like growl on such brilliant pieces like "Stripsearch", "Ashes to Ashes", and the album's almost theatrical (and in many ways presaging for Patton) closer, "Pristina". Even some of the rock pieces stand out only because of …
