Biography

Edit

Flo Rida’s slow emergence as a mixtape rapper didn’t fully prepare anyone for his huge breakthrough in 2008 – his debut single "Low" (featuring T-Pain) stayed at No.1 on the Hot 100 for ten weeks at the beginning of the year, and soon became the biggest-selling ringtone ever with over three million sales. His debut album Mail on Sunday dropped in April 2008 and hit No.4 on the album charts, but in that week it sold less than half the number of Flo Rida’s three singles in the Top 25 at that time: “Low” held firm at No.11, while "Elevator" and "Roll" also sold well.

Flo Rida

Feb, 24 2009

If you thought Flo Rida was set to join such one hit wonders as Plain White T's, D4L and Terror Squad in the distant recesses of your long-term memory, you were wrong, very wrong. His late 2008 song "In The Ayer" with will.i.am was a Top 10 hit on the Hot 100, but compared to the record breaking international success of his debut single "Low" (featuring T-Pain), that's barely a splash. "Low" seemed to indicate the arrival of a new superstar, so compared to those expectations he's had a quiet year since. Now he's returned with another blockbusting mega-hit, "Right Round" featuring Kesha, which interpolates a sample from Dead Or Alive's 80s pop classic "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)". The new single jumped to No.1 this week after selling an astonishing 636,000 digital copies - the biggest first week digital sales ever, beating the previous record Flo Rida himself set with "Low" of 467,000. The song has also raced up the charts in Australia and Canada and is expected to perform similarly elsewhere. It seems to be all-or-nothing with Flo Rida - if his new release isn't a record breaker, you might never know it exists.
