Lithuanians Donate Zappa Statue To Baltimore
Sep, 21 2010
Mustachioed maverick Frank Zappa was more popular in parts of Europe than in his native America; so it's taken a group of dedicated Zappa fans from Lithuania to persuade his hometown of Baltimore to erect a bust of his likeness in his honor.
On Sunday, the mayor of Lithuania's capital Vilnius joined the Lithuanian Zappa Fan Club at the Baltimore unveiling of a Zappa statue, a replica of one which has been on public display in Vilnius since 1995. As well as being an extraordinary guitarist and an surreal humorist, Zappa was known as a champion for freedom of expression, and Sunday was the 25th anniversary of the day Zappa testified to Congress against the "censorship" of government plans to warn consumers about "unsuitable" lyrics in music.
"Thank you so much for just loving my dad," Zappa's daughter Diva told a crowd who were chanting his name. "He'd be wildly amused by this," his widow Gail Zappa said, "because of the absurdity of these guys in Lithuania coming up with this phenomenal sculptor who normally does busts of Stalin."
