Franz Ferdinand is the debut album by Scottish indie rock band Franz Ferdinand, released in early 2004. It entered the United Kingdom album charts at number three in February 2004 and contains three UK top ten singles: "Take Me Out", "This Fire" (on the download chart) and "The Dark of the Matinée" (often referred to simply as "Matinée"). Franz Ferdinand won the 2004 Mercury Music Prize. The album has since sold over 3.6 million copies worldwide.

This album has been released with the Copy Control protection system in some regions.

5 stars Sound the horns...finally some new music that doesn't suck
First off, I'll start out with the obligitory fair warning: You'll hear Franz compared to almost every band that has had some success in the past 2 years...everyone from The Strokes to Interpol and beyond.

Truth is, although Franz Ferdinand pays an agreeable nod to a few bands that have come before them, they have developed their own unique sound and comparisons will undoubtedly fall short. The best way to judge would be for you to see what kinds of music I really like. If you like these bands t…

2 stars Alternative Rock as a Marketing Demographic
I'm not sure why this contrived, by-the-numbers, overhyped "alternative" CD resonated with so many people in 2004. I was even predisposed to like Franz Ferdinand because of all of the critical rave-ups of this young Scottish band. Upon repeated listenings, I found little more than a generic rock band using the marketing template of alternative rock. If this is "alternative", I'll take whatever alternative there is to "alternative".
