The Fugees were a reggae and soul influenced hip-hop group that rose to prominence in the mid-90s when their second album, The Score, became a worldwide hit. Comprising Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, they formed in New Jersey in 1994 and released debut album Blunted On Reality that same year. It didn't go down very well with critics or the public, with only "Nappy Heads" being a very minor hit single.
Their luck changed with the release of The Score in 1996. The first single, "Fu-Gee-La", was their biggest hit so far, but second single "Killing Me Softly" (a cover of the Roberta Flack song) was a huge hit, reaching No.2 in the US and topping the charts in the UK. Third single "Ready Or Not" again topped the charts in the UK, while "No Woman, No Cry" (a Bob Marley cover) reached No.2 in Britain. Both these singles were minor hits in the US too. The international success of these singles led to The Score selling over 18 million copies, making it one of the biggest-selling hip-hop albums of all-time.
After this success, each Fugee went off to pursue solo projects. Lauryn Hill released the hugely successful The Miseducation Of... album, while Wyclef and Pras concentrated on producing tracks and albums for other artists. The Fugees briefly reformed for a number of shows between 2004-06, but despite initial plans to record a new album they split up again in 2007.
