Garbage were formed in 1993, a Scottish/American fusion of the talents of Duke Erikson, Shirley Manson, Steve Marker and Butch Vig.
Vig had been the producer on the hugely successful alt-rock albums Nevermind and Siamese Dream, but when he decided he wanted to play in a band again, he gathered fellow producers Marker and Erikson, with whom he had played before. A year later, in 1994, Manson was asked to join on the basis of auditions and her performances in previous band Angelfish.
Success soon followed, with the single "Stupid Girl" preceding the release of the debut album Garbage in 1996. By this time the band were touring with The Smashing Pumpkins.
It was two years before follow-up album Version 2.0 was released in 1998. It charted in the UK and the US and was nominated for two Grammy awards. "The World is Not Enough" accompanied the new James Bond film of 1999.
beautifulgarbage was released in 2001, but failed to produce any successful singles although it charted reasonably well in the UK and US.
"Why Do You Love Me" was the hit single released from the next album Bleed Like Me (2005), but tensions were forming in the band and there was discussion of a pending break-up. Instead they decided on an indeterminate hiatus.
2007 saw the release of a Best Of compilation Absolute Garbage, a live DVD and a B-sides album. In the meantime Manson is working on a solo album, while Vig, Marker and Erikson have all returned to their producing day jobs.
There is discussion of a new album sometime in 2008/09, amidst comments that any new album will mark a slight style change, stripping back some of the veneer.
