Gene's DisintegrationWith the crushed romanticism and emotional bleakness Drawn to the deep end recalls The Cure's Disintegration (*****) and with its strings and inevitable melodrama Suede's Dog Man Star (*****) will also come to mind. The fact that it bears close comparison to these albums is an indicator of the masterpiece that Gene have produced. A quite beautiful record.
Gene's Meat is Murder?Man, I can't TELL you how disappointed I am with this album. Olympian? Wonderful! To See the Lights? Fantastic? Drawn to the Deep End...okay. Really, I expected more. Not to belabour the Smiths comparison, but so far their discographies are looking awfully similar: brilliant first albums, great stopgap compilations, and then third albums that, while more ambitious, fail to live up to the promises of their debuts.
