Bach's contemporary and one of the supreme masters of the baroque, George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) settled in England after working in his native Germany and Italy and became one of the greatest English composers of his day. Unlike Bach, Handel created many magnificent operas, but he stands out for inventing the English oratorio: unstaged drama at its most ingenious, filled with timeless arias and choruses.
